Caring for silk thread bangles
Keep them dry, perfume first, out of the sun: simple habits that keep a set looking new, and what to do when a thread comes loose.
Silk thread over a rigid base asks for very little. Keep it dry and out of direct heat, and a set lasts for years of occasional wear.
Four habits
- Keep them dry. Silk thread holds water and dries slowly. Take your bangles off before washing your hands, cooking or bathing. A wet bangle put away in a drawer will smell before it stains.
- Perfume and lotion first. Alcohol dulls silk and loosens the glue behind kundan stones. Spray, let it dry, then put your bangles on.
- Store them out of the sun. Sunlight fades dyed thread faster than anything else. A cloth pouch or a closed box in a drawer is enough.
- Give each set its own pouch. Thrown together, stones catch on thread and pull it.
When something goes wrong
- A thread has come loose. Do not pull it. Snip it flush with small scissors and add a dot of clear glue to the cut end. Pulling unwinds the turn underneath and turns a loose thread into a bare patch.
- A stone has fallen out. A dot of jewellery glue will hold it if you still have it. If it happened within three days of delivery, message us and we will sort it out.
- They got wet. Pat them dry with a soft cloth and leave them somewhere airy overnight. Never use a hair dryer: heat shrinks the thread unevenly and the surface puckers.
What is normal
Worn every day, the thread softens and the colour mellows over time. Some people like that look; it is wear, not a fault.
